Lego takes on Minecraft with video game

2 June 2015

Lego, a Danish toys company, has launched an alternative to the popular videogame Minecraft.

Lego Worlds can be purchased now at PS11.99 through the Steam gaming platform. Its final release will be in 2016, featuring both classic and modern playsets as well as popular mini-figures.

Based on feedback from players, features will be added.

Lego already sells Minecraft playsets that allow gamers to build their virtual creations. Lego Worlds will also allow fans to build their virtual creations in reverse.

Tom Stone, TT Games' managing Director, said that Lego Worlds will "represent the physical, Lego brick-building joy that consumers have loved for decades, on a modern platform that delivers an entirely different type of experience with the beloved LEGO bricks."

He added that "From the brick to brick editor to discovering an extensive array of items, characters, and creatures for populating your worlds – the creative possibilities abound."

Favourite Toy

Daniel Goldberg, a writer about the growth and development of Minecraft, stated that he was surprised by how long it had taken.

He said that Minecraft was exactly what Lego should've done 10 years ago.

"I'm certain it will be a huge success for them."

Markus Persson is the Swedish video game developer who invented Minecraft. He has made no secret about his admiration for Lego.

David Gram, Lego's Marketing Director, stated last year that "Minecraft was digital Lego." We only wish we had invented it."

Mr Goldberg believes that Mr Persson, also known as Notch will be "flattered by the game."

He said that Lego was his favorite toy as a child, and was the main inspiration for Minecraft. It was nice to see the things come full circle."

"I don’t think there will be animosity. Game developers generally feel honoured when someone copies an already existing game.

Lego is marketed at children but also for a hardcore of adult enthusiasts.

Microsoft bought Minecraft last year. It has been a hit with both children and adults.

"The audience for Minecraft, has proved itself to be quite big, so I'm sure there will be room for both games," said Mr Goldberg.
